Google Express, the company’s same-day delivery service that was formerly known as Google Shopping Express, is expanding. Starting today, Google Express is available in Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C., bringing the same-day service to more than seven million people (nearly 12 million if you include next-day service).
The search giant is also working with a number of new merchants – 16 total over the past few months – including national brands like 1-800-Flowers, Barnes & Noble, Nine West, PetSmart, Vitamin Shoppe and Sports Authority, just to name a few.
Residents in one of Google’s serviced areas who become Express members can get free same-day or overnight delivery on eligible orders over $15. They also get first dibs on delivery windows and can even share their account with a household member.
Membership is priced at $95 per year (notice that’s a few bucks cheaper than Amazon Prime) or $10 per month should you only plan to use it for a limited time, like during the holidays. What’s more, one-off purchases can be delivered for $4.99. Google is also offering new members three months of service free of charge.
I remember a time when ordering something online was risky, almost taboo. For those with confidence, submitting an order and waiting a week or more for it to arrive was the norm. Much of the retail industry has now moved to the web and if something can’t be at our doorsteps within a day or so, it’s deemed slow.
My how times have changed.
