Yes, You heard it! Although Microsoft concluded its free Windows 10 upgrade program on July 29, 2016, the company has yet to close some of the loopholes that it originally opened for folks running Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. And you can still upgrade to windows 10 if you have a legitimate windows 7 or windows 8.1 installation.
According to Techspot, you can upgrade to windows 10 with a windows 7 or windows 8.1 key. Well I did some search on google and found that websites like zdnet explained about upgrading your old system to windows 10.
I went to find whether what they said is really there.
I had a system running on a legitimate windows 8.1 and I tried to upgrade it to windows 10. I downloaded the windows 10 iso file using windows media creation tool. And opened it.
Now I selected "Create installation media for another PC" option. Then it asked me where to save the ISO file. Selected the location and downloaded it. After the download, opened ISO file in windows explorer and just run the setup. I chose to keep my files and programs. Its your wish, if you want a clean install, you can choose it. So the upgrading started once i had done what needs to be done. Took me more than half an hour to complete the upgradation. But it depends on you system configuration.
It didn't asked me for a product key. And after the completion of the process I checked whether it is activated or not by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation. And I found that it need internet connection to activate. So I then connected my PC online and checked again.
Surprise!! It is activated with a valid digital license. For the record, I never installed windows 10 previously on this system.
The digital license is tied to that device, which means you can reformat the disk and perform a clean installation of the same edition of Windows 10 anytime. You won't need a product key, and activation is automatic.
So what do you think? I think Microsoft knows about these and they intently put it to get more windows 10 users.
